In November of 2013, I will have to start writing my master's thesis. Considering my interest in entrepreneurship and profound experiences with software startups when writing my bachelor's thesis and resulting academic article, I would love to intern at a software startup, be in an entrepreneurial environment and do research the good folks employing me actually, you know, benefit from. San Francisco or New York is awesome, but I doubt anyone would have me. Maybe I should stay close to home and join a startup in Amsterdam. After all, Dan Harple recently stated in an interview that Amsterdam is more 'alive' in terms of startup culture than Berlin, London and even Palo Alto. According to the Startup Genome's report on startup hubs, Amsterdam is not even in the top 25. European cities that are? London, Berlin, Paris and Madrid. According to Dan, this is because these cities spend millions of euros on self-promotion...
Derp. What now? You know what, I'll just collect the 'who is hiring' topics on Hacker News since 2012 and count the number of times each startup hub is mentioned. The HN crowd is probably representative to some extent and at least provides me with some data to base my decision on.
Surprise, Amsterdam beats Madrid, Berlin and Paris by far. Even when considering that most of the Amsterdam mentions are double-whammy posts by booking.com evangelist avar, Amsterdam is mentioned at least as many times as Berlin, Paris and Madrid. However, it looks like I'll have to check out the London scene with a staggering 108 mentions.
Now, why was I procrastinating again? Oh yeah, Business Intelligence in Academia... Better save that for tomorrow.
Note: Oakland, Sao Paolo, Bangalore, Moscow and Warsaw were never mentioned, Tel Aviv just once and were therefore omitted from the data.
