Why was my email leaked? « Dropbox Forums

I understand being skeptical, after all, what are the odds that dropbox was hacked into, and surely they wouldn't sell the email addresses of their users! Surely it's more likely that a silly user just mistaken posted their email address somewhere, or it's just random....

But we're faced with just a few possibilities:

1) Someone guessed my dropbox email address <SNIP>, but not any of my other hundreds of legit addresses on that domain, or any of the honeypot catchalls there. (prior to this post, that email address had never appeared anywhere). And they guessed the op's dropbox-specific email address. It's just coincidental.

2) Dropbox sold some email addresses of current or former users (I've been both types of user under this email address)

3) Dropbox user database has been hacked.

And yes, I have a new dropbox email address as of today. No sense keeping with one that's been compromised.
