A group of ancient lines in the archaeological zone of Buenos Aires, in Nazca, have been destroyed by heavy machinery, El Comercio reported.
According to the daily, the machinery belongs to a firm that is removing limestone from the area.
The lines are located near kilometer marker 444 of the Panamericana Sur Highway. The area adjacent to the lines have reportedly also been affected, due to land being removed from the area.
Eduardo Herrán Gómez de la Torre, director of research at Ojos de Condor, described the extensive damage in the area. "We have witnessed the irreparable destruction to a set of lines and trapezoids that existed in the area,” Herrán said.
“The limestone firm responsible has not been sanctioned or supervised by the authorities of the Regional Directorate of Culture of Ica, despite being in this great archaeological reserve.”
“The company argues that the land where the plant is installed is private property and that the owner can do whatever he wants on his land, but this is not so,” he added.
Mario Olaechea Aguije, Nazca’s regional head of culture, said the limestone quarry was located within private property, and that the owner was free to work the land.
However, according to the daily, the private property is located within an area that was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 18 years ago.

But ironically, they want the new pope to come to Peru....... Get you act together first, and do not spend money on the new pope, when you should be spending money reforming your judicial system, policies, and still having people who live in poverty. Praising a new pope, when you cannot even praise what you have.... get real

This is so tragic, but I am not surprised, and this is an example of Peru being in need of reforming there laws and policies. This is Peru's fault, for being irresponsible and not observing these companies where land is involved. At the end, people could cause a commotion, but nothing is done. Peru is still very corrupt, and it is such a shame. It is 2013, wake up!

That mine has been there for a long time,,,authorities knew about it.. There was enough time to prevent this irreparable disaster,, too late now. Fine, jail and mine closing. Stop. Owner and authorities, responsible.

It breaks my heart. It is no different here in the US, where mining companies are blowing up mountain tops and destroying the Appalachian valleys and rivers.

There is no law, therefore, there is no protection. Anything that has value is fair game....

That amazes me. Peru is a country where the Government owns all minerals and rights under the ground of private property owners, yet where something like this exists, there are no Laws to protect Ancient Archaeology. I guess we know where the money is. What a bunch of jerks the landowners are

Not surprised, but it's tragic. While the mining companies (or anyone with enough power) has free reign, they'll destroy anything for profit.

How could those involved be so stupid? Does the love of money dissolve your brain? Hopefully the company will be fined and used as an example. What poor leadership on several levels. I am appalled.
