The Linux command "man" is used at the command line to explain the functions and definitions of other commands commonly used within Linux.  The term "man" is short for manual and gives you a very in-depth explanation of the said command which you are referring to.  It will also provide an explanation of the different variables which can be used with the command so one can see how to use it effectively.  Below explains how to use "man".

1) You first need to login into the linux shell with the user information that was provided to you so you get to the command prompt.

2) Once logged in then you can type in man and and any other command to see it's use and definition.

3) Now you will see the man screen come up with the command, what it does and then the different options associated with it.

Many man pages are several screens long.  In order to advance through them you can simply arrow up and down or press enter.

4) Once you are done with a "man" page then simply press q to quit and you will be back to your shell prompt.
