Tony Hainsworth Matt, if potential members of the ACS are dissatisfied with what's on offer there are other highly respected professional international institutions which IT professionals can join. I'm proud of belonging to one for most of my working life. The BCS continues to improve itself through the efforts of its staff and members. Maybe the ACS needs to do the same. Tony1h

Nathan Lee Perhaps they could include the following more sensible areas of speciality: * modifying legacy applications and how not to go postal * how to motivate people by regarding staff as nothing more than a drain on company finances * off-shoring jobs and how to remove any pesky trace of IT morale in your workplace * on-shoring when the guy at the top with the bright idea is replaced because it turns out people are more than just a dollar figure * practical support/operations lessons on how to respond professionally at 3am while still preserving your marriage/sanity/cat's sleeping cycle * how to learn to love technical debt and build a niche career out of trying to stem the relentless tide of hacks, rush jobs and changing minds * bonding with workmates over how shit your payroll/timesheet/HR/document storage/approvals systems are * game theory in the workplace and why irrational decisions are best made in committees * learning to embrace scope creep as an on-site consultant and * rubber stamping/steam rolling and other great analogies for the IT workplace environment But I'm not sure the harsh but amusing reality of those job areas will motivate kids when they could aspire to be a movie star or professional sportsman like the media tell them they can be.. Right? :)1h

Jason Goodridge Matt, I’m sure I could go to any society’s website, events and other contributions to the community and find something I could spin in a negative light if I so chose to. The measure of the Society isn’t in a brochure or two that you have selectively chosen to make a point, it is in its collective works. The ACS is one of the oldest computer societies in the world and yet the computing profession is relatively young. The engineers, lawyers, doctors and accountants have had a lot longer mandate that certain courses equal a qualified individual. The ACS has to deal with pathways from experience, mixed IT/non-IT degrees, IT and engineering degrees, conversion masters courses and of course the plethora of vendor certifications. It isn’t straightforward to know if an “IT practitioner” has any business working on the systems they are working on. I can see no greater reason than that to have a professional society trying to sort this out. While we may not always hit the mark we are always striving to be better, and to make the profession better. It is worth noting that many of the world’s other societies look to our certification program and it is one of the few accredited under IP3. Our university accreditation process is accredited under the Seoul Accord. I didn’t see that mentioned in your article. I honestly believe in what we’re doing at the ACS but we have a long way to go, that’s why I got involved. I applaud your efforts to do the same Matt but no one likes a complainer. If there is something you can see we could be doing better, then help us fix it, don’t just sit back and complain about us. 2h

Matt Barrie Hi Tapan I uploaded the front cover of the Careers one, it's done by the ACS Foundation which is the arm of the ACS promoting technology education. The second brochure (single page A4 with the big circle from ichoosetechnology) which I uploaded was from the government but is pointed to from the ACS brochure. Both were handed out today. When Alan Noble who runs Google here pointed out how horrendous it was one of the people there said he was responsible for it and had an ACS badge on. His response "we had to list all the possible job types, and had to start somewhere". Not good enough. I haven't even started on that one.. you're going to attract kids to technology by promoting "Help Desk Operator" "Benefits Manager" and "ICT Policy Officer" as career paths?!? And the four pillars of tech are Enterprise Governance, Enterprise Implementation, Technology Services and Technology application/building?!?5h

H Bryant Lanier Sr Ok Bill M you opened the door , Why do you not focus on real here, that says what he is saying is 100% have you in your older age forgotten things that suggest more times than not any thinking person of an measurable IQ already knows that there is an overwhelming mountain of data to support his view to the point that it adds even more weight to the unspoken truth that shows that in this age of philosophy Academic cults have invaded every aspect of life business and culture of all nations without little regard for anything other than promoting ever mounting fees and transactions from people that still believe it is required to retain papers from Academia … His candor sheds light on an even larger truth … that shows we our generation, have done very bad things to emerging generation via these ever growing needs for new versions of “certifications, compliance records, stamps, seals, papers,…a university is a corporation and as last I recall all corporations demand a profit… and what he has shown is some of the ugly yet known ways they the universities of the world make the profit 5h

Bill Malkin "Bill I don't see how ACS functions are relevant but I keynoted at one last year. Also I'm on the panel in a couple of weeks in Canberra for another ACS event. Today was also pretty much ACS run/dominated. I'm not sure what your second question is. Can you answer my question about how the ACS is relevant in 2013?" Because good people like you are involved with it.5h

H Bryant Lanier Sr Matt, normally I would send a message like this in private, however the wonder direct in your face factual assessment you have made of systems and the flack you are facing for telling the truth tells me, what our own R&D has shown more times than not over the past 30 years Therefore , without objection Please accept that I would like extend a public invitation to you to arrange a voice call between you and I for the specific purpose of discussions of ways for your services to be retained on a long term basis by our group. via a contract of your choice.6h
